Fonatur launches smart destinations program to digitalize tourism in Mexico

Fonatur wants to change tourism in Mexico. The National Fund for Tourism Promotion shared big news. It happened during the Tianguis Turístico México 2026. Sebastián Ramírez Mendoza, Fonatur’s Director General, announced a new national program. Its goal is to turn tourist destinations into smart models. This will help modernize the industry. It will also adapt it to the digital age.

Why does Mexico need smart destinations?

Global tourism is moving fast toward digital platforms. Ramírez Mendoza explained this clearly. Mexico still has gaps in this area. For example, many tourism services still work offline. That needs to change.

Here is a striking fact: 71% of travelers already use artificial intelligence. They use it to plan their trips. Mexico must join this trend. Otherwise, the country will lose competitiveness.

The problem with foreign technology

Most tourism sales in Mexico depend on foreign companies. International platforms control the information. They also take most of the profits. As a result, local businesses get less benefit.

Mexico needs its own tourism technology. That is a key message from the program. It is not just about using tools from abroad. It is about creating new solutions at home.

The five pillars of the program

The program will evaluate and support tourist destinations. It is built on five main pillars:

  1. Governance: Better coordination between public and private groups.
  2. Innovation: Fresh solutions for old problems.
  3. Technology: Digital infrastructure and good internet access.
  4. Sustainability: Responsible tourism that protects nature.
  5. Accessibility: Destinations that welcome all travelers.

Digital services are a top priority. This includes trip planning and the visitor experience. Everything should work online and connect smoothly.

A call for states and cities

Fonatur will open a formal call soon. States and municipalities can apply to join. Those selected will become part of the smart destinations model.

A Mexican Network of Smart Destinations will also be created. It will work with international organizations. The network will help share experiences and best practices.

Help with funding and technical support

Fonatur will not just give rules to follow. The organization will also offer technical help. It will provide funding for diagnostics and digital plans.

Small tourism businesses are a priority. They will receive support to build their own tech tools. Small hotels, travel agencies, and tour guides can all benefit.

The AI challenge for Mexico

Artificial intelligence is changing how people travel. Tourists already use it to find flights. They also book hotels and plan trips with it. Mexico cannot stay behind.

Smart destinations are the right answer. This is not technology for its own sake. It is a strategy to become more competitive.

Final thoughts

Fonatur is making a strong move toward digitalization. The smart destinations program has clear goals. There are five main pillars. There is funding and technical support. There will be a national and international network.

Remember this number: 71% of travelers already use AI. Mexico must act now. The goal is not just to attract more tourists. It is to offer a better experience. And to keep tourism profits inside the country.

Smart destinations are the future. Fonatur just started the engine.
